OSD Build & Capture Works Great Until I Try to Add the Install Software Update step...

Hi All,

Environment:  SCCM 2012 R2 running over Server 2012 R2 with local SQL 2012 Standard

I have a Build and Capture TS for Windows 7 Pro w/ SP1 that works fantastic and have a clean Windows 7 wim image captured that I can use to restore to any computer and then apply software updates.  This works well with the only exception that it is a huge time sink as a gazillion updates apply ever so slowly.  I've even gone so far as to use the following guide so ALL the updates get applied before I'm presented with a logon screen:

Now, here's the fun part, I (like all of you) would rather the updates were installed as a part of the Build and Capture process to save time on actual system deployment.  So, smart guy I am, I decide to add the "install software updates" step to my Build and Capture TS and fire up a vm expecting it to run through each task, install software updates, and then proceed to capture.  It doesn't.  Just finishes the software update process, reboots, and sits at a logon screen.  Bummer.

No matter what I try, I always end up back at the logon screen if I try to apply updates during the build and capture ts.  This has me stumped as I've done tons of research/experimentation and can't seem to find the magical formula to make this work.

Scheduling the updates for injection directly into the wim does also work, I've done it, but it only installs base updates.  It won't inject any new software updates such as Internet Explorer 10.  Update injection won't inject ALL software updates.

Any ideas?  I'm hoping someone has been here and done ____ to fix it.
