Failed to Run Task Sequence 0x80040154

I have been looking all over for some help with this one.

I am pretty new to SCCM, but I setup a SCCM 2012 SP1 CU4 server.  I am using it for Endpoint Protection and Windows Updates.

I have been reading on how to use PXE and have followed several guides to get this working.  Right now my workstation will successfully boot using PXE.  My problem is that the machine reboots immediately after "Preparing Network Connections."  I do get an IP address when I push F8 so it is not a network driver issue.  I can ping other devices on my network by name and by IP address so it is not a DNS problem either.

There are 4 error lines in red, but I cannot figure out how to fix this.

  • Coult not create WMI locator class (80040154)
  • Failed to connect to WMI namespace \\.\ROOT\CIMV2 (Code 0x80040154)
  • RegOpenKeyExW failed for Software\Microsoft\SMS\Task Sequence
  • GetTsRegValue() failed. 0x80070002.

SCCM 2012 SP1 - PXE error

$

Hi All,

I am trying to do a OS build via SCCM task sequence for esprimo c720. PXE boot is working fine but after the windows screen it goes blank and restarts in which i have tried below troubleshooting steps like

1. Updating the relevant drivers on the boot image

2. Verified drivers are getting installed manually and also standalone image is working fine

3. Enabled Command support and did IPconfig (Gave Windows IP configuration) and diskpart (gave disk space) which is fine i think

But when  i try to ping the SCCM primary and DP server. It throws error asPING TRANSMIT FAILED:GENERAL FAILURE. So i concluded the network adaptor with esprimo c720 has some issues. Is there any steps i need to try further. Please help

Need to resume task sequence after unplanned reboot - Error Task Sequence environment not found

$

The task sequence in SCCM 2012 R2 is being used to deploy a Hyper-V host on Windows Server 2012 R2.

When installing the Hyper-V role, we have a intermittent issue where after the restart, the TRUSTEDINSTALLER installs a kernel driver (vmswitch.sys) and then restarts the system while the SCCM engine is waiting for the SCCM client to initialize.

This breaks the TSE and it throws the error "Task Sequence Environment not found" a few minutes later.

Does anyone know of any way to RESUME the task sequence, or to set the TSEnv.dat back to a clean state that will allow it to resume the TS? I am thinking about configuring an AutoLogon/Logon script that will check try and recover & resume these failures.

ALTERNATELY, does anyone know how to prevent the Trusted Installer from rebooting on Windows Server 2012 R2?

"Site-Based" Boot Media Works / "Dynamic" Boot Media Gives "MP Location Returned an Empty Site Code"

Good Morning Guys -

This morning we had some issues testing OSD builds.  We used a USB drive we made into boot media a few days ago to boot up an "Unknown Computer."  After clicking the initial "Next," we got the error 0x80004005 instead of no task sequences being listed.

I tried re-creating the media (Dynamic), but still got the same error.  After research, I re-created the media once more with the same settings - except - used "Site-Based" instead of "Dynamic" and it worked as I am now displayed a list of task sequences to run.

Why would "Site-Based" media work and "Dynamic" media not?

Below are some environment details as well as other things I examined...

  • Primary server is remote to location, but do have a local secondary
  • Boot Image Config I used on all 3 times I tried above:

          - Boot Image: Selected Image

          - Distribution Point - Selected Local Secondary

          - Management Point - Selected Primary Server (only option)

  • IP was retrieved on machine via DHCP.  After opening a command prompt, I could ping both primary and secondary servers
  • Verified machine's IP (via DHCP) was in a boundary (It's Subnet was entered).  Boundary was assigned to the proper local secondary

In the log file, there was only a couple of lines which noted errors (besides PXE which we don't use)

Here is the smsts.log file just in case - names were changed for security...

Any ideas?  Thank Guys!

Adapting task sequence while task sequence is running?

Hi,

Just a sccm 2012 functional question:what happens when you edit/change a task sequence while you are running a task sequence, f.e. you add a reboot at the end of the task sequence.

Will it do this extra step or is the full task sequence loaded in the beginning and so "live" (during TS) modifications ignored.

Pls advise.

J.

When I add prestart to MDT boot image in SCCM 2012 SP1 R2 , It launches HTA wizard.hta .

How is this boot image able to launch this HTA without adding HTA support to this MDT boot image ?

I double checked Optional components tab and there is no HTA optional component added to this boot image.

Alright folks,

my Head is aching and the pain is increasing.

My Environment:

--- VMware ESXi 5.1 ---

  • AD DNS DHCP -- Server 2012 Std --- hostname dc.ebs.test
  • Database --- Server 2012 Std / SQL Server 2012 --- hostname daba.ebs.test
  • System Center Configuration Manager 2012 --- Server 2012 Std --- hostname SysCen.ebs.test
  • 3x Clients --- W7 x86, W7 x64 --- hostnames win732, 123-PC, win7new

The VM win732 is working perfect! OSD, TS, Application Deployment, everything works.

BUT

The 123-PC is a pain in my neck and Ill get a nice greeting from the PXE mentioned in the Topic.

These are the messages in smspxe.log:

Ok to answer some questions beforehand:

the computer in the log above is in:

DNS reverse/forward lookup zones

ActiveDirectory as a computer in the builtin computer group (all other machines reside there as well)

DHCP as reservation (boot option 67 set or unset does not make any difference as far as i can see)

123-PC is listed in devices and added to a collection inside SCCM.

I deployed a task sequence for that collection.

the distribution point has unknown computer support enable

123-PC has surrendered after i installed win7 + SCCM-Agent manually, now it works!

Right after that i created a new vm win7new and the same problems again.

Is a PC which never had an agent installed a unknown device for sccm?

if not what is an unknown device exactly? (yes i know what unknown means, but it is discoverd from Active Directory, so why is it unknown?)

i hope you understand what my problem is.

if there is additional information needed i will support you with that as good as i can.

thanks in advance for your kind help

TSInstallSWUpdate.exe - Option to prevent computer restart ?

$

Hello,

Is there a hidden switch when using "TSInstallSWUpdate.exe"  to prevent automatic restart when a pending reboot is detected at the end of the execution ?

Regards.

When is it safe to update a task sequence?

$
0
0

We have a fairly busy environment, with OSD happening all the time. We have been updating our major task sequences off hours, but I wonder if that is even necessary. After testing in QA, is it safe to update the task sequence at any time without bothering or confusing workstations that are in the middle of an OSD operation?

I think I understand that the task sequence is pulled down to the local hard drive very early in OSD, and it doesn't return to re-read the task sequence after that. Is that correct? If that's true then we don't need to worry about workstations losing their place in the task sequence if we update it while they are executing the task sequence.

Thank you for any light others can shed on this.

Orchestrator and SCCM 2012 integration: run task sequence and install assigned applications/packages?

Dear,

We do not have Orchestrator running in our SCCM 2012 R2 environment. Though I wonder if we could accomplish the following scenario with it:

Task sequence Windows 7 => Orchestrator step which queries assigned installations to the computer object and installs them one by one.

Could you advise?

Kind regards,

WinPE can't view USB 2.0 drives

I'm using SCCM 2012 R2 (with .1104 patch) to deploy Win7x64.  I have in in-place refresh task sequence that uses USMT offline and a WinPE 3.1 boot image. I'm having a weird problem with the boot image.

I can create boot media on USB with SCCM, and I can get my HP EliteBook 8440p to boot to that USB drive, but once the boot image is loaded into memory, it can't see the USB drive.  The drive is USB 2.0, the port is USB 2.0, and I've tested with 3 different USB drive's and all 3 ports on the laptop.

I took the boot image a made a bootable CD instead.  This works up until the drive is partitioned.  The task sequence runs diskpart to clean the drive, then runs diskpart again to partition the drive.  On the second diskpart call, it throws an error:  diskpart encountered an error a device attached to the system is not functioning.

I'm assuming and hoping that the diskpart error is related to the usb issue, but I can't figure it out.  I've loaded the storage drivers.  When I first boot to WinPE, I can view the disk drive fine.

Software Updates do not install during OS Deployment (timeout / Error 800705b4)

$

Hello,

I am not able to get "Install Software Updates" TS working fine during OS deployment.

I do use SCCM 2012 R2 and am trying to deploy Windows Server 2012 R2 OS.

Basically it appears the task sequence failed during "Waiting for RefreshUpdates complete notification from Updates Deployment Agent" tep because of a 30 mn timeout (as shown below in smsts.log)

I checked misc. logs (WUAHandler.log, UpdatesStore.log, UpdatesHandler.log, UpdatesDeployment.log) after the deployment. And everything looks fine from my perspective. Software update assessment is performed, expected missing updates are identified, and added to deployment list. All those operations are performed in less than 5 mn (vs. the 30 mn timeout)

I saw I am not the only one to have this problem and tried a few suggestions but nothing works in my case:

- Add SMSMP to install properties of SCCM client

- Move Software Update tasks at the end after a restart

Also I noticed that after the computer has been deployed, he is getting updates installed as required after some time. It only does not work during OSD

TS: Windows updates blocking

$

Dear,

Our capture task sequence stalls on Windows updates. Strange thing is, our deploy TS doesn't and also there mandatory updates are the same (for now, capture TS should contains all updates when succesfull).

The issue is similar to this one:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2011/01/28/known-issue-install-software-updates-action-hangs-on-windows-7.aspx#pi140062=3

We also see in the smsts.log as last entries (they are there for some hours now):

Waiting for job status notification ...

Waiting for job status notification ...

Waiting for job status notification ...

though the link is for SCCM 2007 whereas we have 2012 AND our deploy TS works fine.

Please advise.
J.

OSD task sequence fails when 2 or more network cables attached

I run SCCM 2012 R2, and am starting to build an image for Server 2012 R2

The server I'm testing has 2 network ports.  If I connect only 1 network cable, the image process completes without issue.  But  I noticed when I cable both, and launch the build, it will fail before even starting with the following:

RequestMPLocation failed; 0x80004005

GetMPLocations failed; 0x80004005

QueryMPLocator: no valid MP locations are received

With both cables connected, I drop to a cmd prompt and ipconfig, both have valid IP addresses, are identified correctly, and I can ping the MP server and get to any other network locations.

The simple work around is to just plug in one cable to do server images, but we have servers delivered to remote sites that a 3rd party racks and cables, so to have them "just cable one", then the rest later (or get the network guy to disable ports temporarily) so we can image it is kinda hokey.

Anyone seen this before?  thanks in advance for any input

Diskpart Script is not working in WinPE

I have a task sequence to install Windows 7 on a laptop.  this laptop has to have four partitions to allow for multiple boots.  I am trying to use diskpart to format only the Partition that Windows 7 is going on (disk 0 partition 4).  I have removed the format and partition step in teh task sequence and added a command line step with the following command:

diskpart /s "path to file\diskpart.txt"  The text file is saved on the image share of my SCCM server. The text file contains the following commands:

select disk 0

select partition 4

format fs=override

exit

My issue is that the SMTS log states that diskpart can't open or read the file.  I have tried to use the UNC and the IP address in the path to the .TXT file.  I can ping the location and the rest of the image loads fine.  I have two questions:

1. is this even necessary?  Will the OSD overwrite the selected partition anyway?  I have it set to install on the partition 4.

2. Do you need to do anything special if bit locker was on the drive before?  These boxes will be re-imaged frequently and they will require bit locker.  Thanks in advance.

Not joining domain during OSD

Hello,

I am having a strange issue with one model of laptop. It is a Lenovo Yoga that uses USB 3.0 -> Ethernet dongle to PXE. In other words there is not a "true" NIC on the laptop. I do get to PXE and I do get to choose my task sequence. I have made sure I have an IP Address before, during and after the "Apply Network Settings" step. I have checked the unattended.xml to make sure my account is correct. Below are the logs from UnattendedGC and Debug (Setuperr.log, Setupact.log, NetSetup.log)

I know NetJoinDomain failed error code is [1355] is a communications error, but I am not sure how it is since I don't lose network along the way. I also understand this could indicate a DNS/WINS issue but we have other models loading fine.

The odd thing to me is that the deployment installs the applications in the Task Sequence, so my NIC doesn't appear to be the problem. I have not changed the order in the Task Sequence from the default order of steps so Network Settings is still before Drivers are applied.

Recover a receovery key?

Went through a migration and an exec is claiming he is missing data.  Computer association is no longer present in SCCM as it aged out past the retention limit.  When I pulled scanstate.log from the client computer, I found the SMP path. I can browse there and the .MIG file is still there. So I have a .MIG file but no recovery key. Are there any logs or DBs anyone knows of that I can pull old recovery keys from if I have the SMP path to the old migration data but the association entry is gone?
