Driver name mismatch in CM07 & CM12

Question on drivers for OSD in SCCM2012. We are trying to manually import each and every driver used for our Windows XP image in SCCM207. As part of the driver import, we copied drivers from the raw drivers folder in SCCM2007 to SCCM2012 and ran a driver import to create a driver package.

Once the driver packages were in CM12, we are trying to edit the task sequence in CM12 for XP and refer to this driver. While referencing the imported driver package, we see differences in he name of the driver referenced between CM07 and CM12 while the models are the same. For EG;

Name is          Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller
Driver Package   Intel Matrix Storage Version 9.6.0.1014
Driver in CM 7   Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller 9.6.0.1014 x86
Driver in CM12   Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller

Why is the driver of a different name in CM07 and CM12, we have manually verified that the contents in raw drivers folder and the driver package folder are exactly the same

Hey guys!

I'm new here but I really enjoyed reading on this forum about troubleshooting and found many awesome guides here.

Now my first post. Didn't find anything within at least 20 hours of troubleshooting and googling without a single result.

My Lab Setup:

Server 2012 Hyper-V Host

- Server 2012 with SCCM 2012 Standalone Primary Site Server (SCCM 2012 SP1 CU2)

- Server 2012 with SQL Server 2012 SP1

- Server 2012 as Domain Controller, DHCP Server, DNS Server etc.

Installed roles on the SCCM:

- Application Catalog web service point

- Application Catalog website point

- Component server

- Distribution point

- Endpoint Protection point

- Management point

- Site server

- Site system

- Sofware update point

- State migration point

I created a build and capture TS

The virtual client boots into PXE and I get to the list of the task sequences.

After selecting one of it, it says checking dependencies, etc. and after about 20 seconds I get the error

Failed to run task sequence (0x80004005)

The server is configured to use http.

The Task sequences were created with the new PXE images and with SP1. CU2 was installed after..

Error messages are at the end.

Stuck at Windows Logo after Download of WIM File

Hi guys,

We are having some major problems with PXE booting a set of laptops via SCCM 2012. We have been able to successfully deploy the same package to our desktops PCs however. The boot images and task sequences have been set up correctly. The PXE client sends request and gets response from DHCP, and finds the policy. The WIM file is then downloaded successfully and the client switches to the Windows 8 logo as we are using the ADK. At this point nothing happens and it remains stuck like this. There is no spinning wheel and I can't access command prompt to try and find out any problems. I've looked on the SMSPXE logo and SCCM thinks everything is OK.

I have confirmed the problems with booting are not driver issues. I've been able to boot from a fresh windows image file on a separate network. Even with all of the available drivers boot fails. The only thing I can think of is that this site are using Cisco switches - is it possible that they are causing the problem? This seems unlikely to me though as the desktop PCs are using the same switches and settings but have imaged successfully.

Please please please help as we really have no idea what to try next.

Thanks.

JTh

Portfast

I'm having a strange issue when trying to PXE boot.

I boot the machine and get an F12 prompt as expected.  When I press F12 I get an error message relating to \Boot\BCD 0x0000000F.  I reboot the laptop I'm trying to image and again get an F12 prompt but this time when I hit F12 the process works fine.  This happens with any machine I try to PXE boot that either, hasn't been PXE booted before or hasn't been PXE booted for a few minutes.

My question is, could portfast being disabled cause this issue?

Setup is SCCM 2012 SP1 single primary site running on Server 2012.  DP with PXE is also running Server 2012 on a different subnet from the site server.  DHCP options 66 and 67 are set to the DP's IP address and smsboot\x64\wdsnbp.com.  IP helpers point to the DHCP server only.

I'm having our network team investigate the switch config and I'll report back if I get a fix.  Any feedback in the meantime would be appreciated.

Unable to automate the restoring of profiles - SCCM 2012

We have SCCM 2012 in our environment and  we want to automate the migration from Window XP to Windows 7

The objective is:

We have good bandwith and storage that accomdate the user profiles that's why we prefer this option

a. Before deploy the new OS copy the profiles in server  \\sccmprod\profiles

b. Install the Windows 7

c.  Restore the profiles

The USMT package is ready the SCCM and I enable the SMP role

Before upgrade the OS it's copied the profile in the in the server  \\sccmprod\profiles

Issues :

My issues is when restoring the profiles is NOT working

Please advise is there any sepcial configuration that I need to do or certificate need to configure before to automate the restoration of profiles after migrate from XP to Windows 7

I just used the default setting

SCCM 2012 SP1: exported task sequence?

Hi,

I wonder if I could find a "best practise" exported task sequence & import  it into my configuration.
Anybody can/want to share or any place I can find this?

Thanks.

ConfigMgr 2012, 802.1x, Win8 Metro & Apps Issue

$

We are having an issue with our Windows 8 deployments & 802.1x; mainly metro & apps issues.

For reference:

Sits on Guest VLAN

Once authenticated, moves to one of these VLANs:
Domain1 VLAN (PC is on this domain)
Domain 2 VLAN
Domain 3 VLAN
Domain 4 VLAN

For whatever reason, once a user from Domain 3 or Domain 4 authenticates, the metro start screen comes up entirely blank aside from their username in the upper right corner.  Also, the apps are all blank as well.  (Yet, when you search for Google Chrome for example it does show up)

Any idea why Metro and Apps would be blank for certain vlans?

sfc /scannow did not fix the issue.  And Domain 2 (for whatever reason) works.

Thank you for your help!

SCCM 2012 and MDT 2012 customizations ?

$

Hi,

I am looking for some general advise I am trying to transfer some MDT customations
(not created by me) from SCCM 2007 Task sequence using MDT to SCCM 2012 using MDT.
Both SCCM systems are using MDT 2012 Update 1. So here are some questions I have.

1. Startup Customizations.

I suspect there might be a script that prompts for the computer name.

So I assume this would be in the boot wim somewhere. Is there a way I
can look in the boot wim to work out where it is? How do I extract it etc?
And grap any other custom scripts etc.

2. Import the Boot image directly into 2012?

Now the other option I am wondering is if I can just import the boot wim
directly from 2007 into 2012, which might bring the customizations with it.

Would this work or would I run into grief becuase the two versions of SCCM
using different versions of PE?

So in general I am trying to work out the best way of approaching this.
Any other advice greatly apprecaited.

Thanks,

OSD Task Sequence failing (MDT) 0x80070002

My task sequence is failing at one of my sites. The error is below, and it says it can't find the file specified. Distribution point status shows all green, and all content has been validated and redistributed 3 times. My guess right now is that this distribution point is on a different subnet 255.255.254.0 rather then 255.255.255.0. Can this be a cause? If so, what's the fix?

Install drivers based on motherboard type

Hello All!

We have a new PC that is a "built" computer so there is no Manufacture to get the "Computer System" from WMI. I have found that all the motherboards are the same using the Intel DB75EN.

How do I call the drivers in my Task Sequence to install the driver package? I was trying this but its not working.

Select *FROM Win32_BaseBoard Where Product Like "%<DB75EN>% "

I usually just use SELECT * FROM Win32_ComputerSystem WHERE Model LIKE "%<6272GU>%" but since i dont have a "model or manufacturer" it will not work.

Any help is appreciated.

There are so many posts on this topic I'm a little embarassed to have not found an answer I could make sense of.  I'm hoping someone in the forums can help-

I'm working to deploy SCCM 2012 in my environment and keep getting an abortpxe.com error while trying to deploy my Windows 7 reference image to a VM.  Specifically, I get this error:

PXE Boot aborted. Booting to next device...

I'm running SCCM 2012 on Windows 2012 as a hyper-v guest on server on a 2012 server. Tthe distribution point is PXE-enabled and is enabled for unknown computers.  The task has been deployed to the unknown computers collection and it appears to be working when using a physical machine.

The VM is also on a Windows 2012 Hyper-V host (a different host, not that it should matter).  The VM has a legacy NIC installed.  When I look at my SMSPXE.log, I don't see any clear errors.

SCCM 2012 SP1 Offline USMT

Does anyone have a guide to create a Task Sequence to perform an Offline USMT? I have to reinstall the OS on 9 desktops and save their User profiles. I would do an Online USMT but these desktops are failing to install the SCCM client.

I searched all over the place and I have yet found a tutorial on how to do it offline. Prefer to have 1 TS that can do Online or Offline Reinstall.

Thanks!

When trying to create a bootable USB using the create  task sequence media, I ma getting the error Media creation failed with error message "this parameter is incorrect:" I've tried all the fixes suggested on the internet including:

- disconnecting all mapped drives

- assigned a drive letter to reserved partition

- installing config manager on Vista instead of Win 7

- trying different usb drives and formatting them in a specific way as suggested

- launching config manager as admin

etc etc ad nauseum....

This is driving me crazy! Any help would be appreciated , I've uploaded the createtsmedia.log file

System Center 2012 Configuration Manager - Very slow MDT task sequence export

Hello. We are using SCCM 2012 with MDT 2012 to deploy OS (Win 7).  Everything is working ok. The problem is that when I try to export the task sequence it takes very long time (around 1 hour). Is this normal behavior? I am exporting only the task sequence itself without dependencies. Thank you

Suspended TSManager processes

$

The issue: hundreds of suspended processes for TSManager with the command line "-cleanup" across many computers in the organization. Resuming these processes causes them to continue work, flush some logs to smsts.log and exit. Unfortunately, the information they flush doesn't allow me to identify the Task Sequence that spawned the -TSManager.exe -cleanup process. Please note that these are not hung, they are actually in state "Wait::Suspended" as reported by Process Explorer v15.11.

Background info: I have client 5.00.7804.100 deployed to servers and workstations alike. I have several task sequences that run once per hour. Two hourly task sequences run on each server once an hour. 1 of them runs a kix script and the other runs a VBScript. For the task sequence that runs a VBScript, PSEXEC launches cscript.exe and exits and thus the Task Sequence should exit almost immediately while the VBScript remains in the background gathering performance information and sends the data off to another server. All of that should be completely transparent. As a result of this process, this task sequence always fails. PSEXEC returns the PID of the spawned process as the error code when you used the -D option (launch and exit). I have this sequence to continue on error. The smsts.log files reflect this. That covers the servers: 1 kix, 1 VBScript.

The workstations use the exact same kix task sequence that the servers do but as it is deployed to a seperate collection there are 2 deployments. This issue occurs on both servers and workstations so my thought is that the issue is with the task sequence with the kix script if it is actually specific to a task sequence. I have not been able to confirm the task sequences that were ran to the suspended processes on the system so it could just as well be that all task sequences could have this issue.

Has anyone seen this issue before? This was not happening, to my knowledge, on Config Manager 2007.

WinRE and DaRT - No Passowrd / Authentication

Hi All

I have intergrated DaRt 8.1 into my WinRE image and deployed it via task seqeunce to my Windows 7 machines.

I have noticed that WinRE when created from a windoes 8 installtion media does not prompt you for authentication when you enter the recovery environent.

As you can imagine this can be a major security risk especially when combined with DaRT, users have the potential tobe able to hit "repair computer" then get access to all those nice tools suck as "Lock-Smith" allowing them to change passwords.

Windows 7 RE prompts you for authentication - why doesnt the Win 8 RE do the same ?

Can WinRE 8 / DaRT 8.1  be password protected ?

Any ideas anyone ?????

Managing Multiple Regional Settings

I am currently working on a Task Sequence but I need to use multiple locations and multiple keyboard layouts for each site, I have a few ideas on how to manage it, One of which is by creating a step for each location and setting the relevant settings for each. The location is set in a variable LOCATIONCODE prior to the task sequence.

I was wondering about best practices here and if anyone has any more ideas on how to best manage this?

Hi

Have built a thick Windows 8 image in VM and want to run the capture CD.

But I need to prep system for sysprep. If memory serves I believe Microsoft said I can use an existing unattend.xml from my Windows 7 x64 build?

Has anyone seen information on the sysprep setup needed for a thick image?

Thanks!

SCCM 2012 SP1 CU2 Task Sequence Not Completing After Reboot

$

This problem is really causing us problems, we keep encountering it, it will not go away:

Basically, in any task sequence, if we use a Restart Computer step, it will reboot, the smsts log shows that the reboot step IS SUCCESSFUL, but then it fails to continue the remainder of the task sequence.

There are a number of errors in the log below, when Googling the errors I have seen reference to the "Failed to open key Software\Microsoft\SMS\" error before in the following forum post, but I do not believe it to be a problem with the WinPE binaries, as we have recreated those from default ADK files, since installing CU2 today (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/1efc7d74-53b5-4b08-bd9a-52e538bdd6d6/sccm-2012-sp1-osd-task-sequence-not-completing)

I have searched for the other errors, but no results seem to be solutions to out problems or related in any way.

Please could some kind person take a look at the last bit of the log below, to see if they can offer any advice?

Thanks for any assistance........

Customizing WinPE 3.1 and WinPE 4.0 boot images for use in ConfigMgr 2012 R2

With ConfigMgr 2012 R2, importing of WinPE 3.1 for Operating Systems Deployment is supported. The support also extends to importing of WinPE 4.0 boot images. While importing of WinPE 3.1 and WinPE 4.0 boot images is supported, servicing them is not supported and the option is not available. Servicing includes adding/removing optional components, enabling command support, changing background image and adding drivers.

This document describes steps that will help you in servicing boot images outside of ConfigMgr that you can import into ConfigMgr 2012 R2.

The following is described in this document. The command line examples use WinPE 3.1 from WAIK but they can be easily translated to WinPE 4.0 from Windows 8 ADK.

  1. Adding optional components
  2. Adding drivers
  3. Enabling command shell in WinPE

Install WAIK/ ADK

The first and foremost requirement for servicing WinPE 3.1 and WinPE 4.0 boot images and then importing into ConfigMgr is installing WAIK for WinPE 3.1 and Windows 8 ADK for WinPE 4.0.

WAIK is available for download here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5753

Windows 8 ADK is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652

Getting the boot image

The boot image (winpe.wim) in WAIK can be found from the WAIK installation path e.g. C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\winpe.wim. Copy winpe.wim to another folder e.g. C:\WinPEWAIK

Mount using DISM

DISM is a command line utility available with the Deployment and Imaging tools of ADK. The executable can be found in the ADK or WAIK installation directory. The following command mounts the boot image

dism.exe /mount-wim /wimfile:C:\WinPEWAIK\winpe.wim /index:1 /mountdir:C:\WinPEMount

Add Optional Components

After mounting, the boot image is ready to be serviced. Optional components and drivers can now be added to the boot image using DISM. The optional components to be added to the boot images can be found in the installation directory of WAIK or ADK whichever one you are using. For WinPE 3.1 the optional components are located inC:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_OCs\. After you have identified the optional components to be added, the following command adds them to the mounted boot image. Add the following components to the mounted image. More components can be added as needed.

-         Winpe-wmi.cab

-         Winpe-script.cab

-         Winpe-wds-tools.cab

dism.exe /image:C:\WinPEMount /add-package /packagepath:"C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_OCs\winpe-wmi.cab"

dism.exe /image:C:\WinPEMount /add-package /packagepath:"C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_OCs\winpe-script.cab"

dism.exe /image:C:\WinPEMount /add-package /packagepath:"C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_OCs\winpe-wds-tools.cab"

Add Drivers

If you are imaging hardware that needs specific drivers, the drivers can be added to the boot image using DISM. If it is not required, then you can skip this step. The following command adds a driver to the mounted boot image

dism.exe /image: C:\WinPEMount /add-driver /driver:<path to driver .ini file>

Commit and unmount boot image

Now that you have added the optional components and drivers, servicing of the boot image is complete and it has to be now unmounted and the changes committed to thewim file. The following command unmounts the wim file and commits the changes you have made.

dism.exe /unmount-wim /mountdir: C:\WinPEMount /commit

Import boot image into ConfigMgr

Now that you have serviced your boot image and are ready to use it for imaging using task sequences in SCCM, you can import it. Importing can be done by launching the SCCM admin console and navigating to Software Library -> Operating Systems-> Boot Images.

*Note that the boot images properties will have those tabs hidden that provide servicing capabilities.

Enable Command shell

For debugging and troubleshooting purposes in WinPE, the command shell may need to be enabled. The following steps will enable command shell in a boot image

    1. Open WMI instance corresponding to the boot image package you imported using "Open Instance". The package ID for the boot image can be found in the boot image list view under the Image ID column in SCCM Admin Console.

SMS_BootImagePackage.PackageID = “<packageID>”

  1. Update property EnableLabShell and set its value toTrue.
  2. Refresh the list view in Admin Console and right- click on the imported boot image and selectUpdate Distribution Points action.
