Are Multicast Deployments from OSD Task Sequence Possible?

$
0
0

Here is my issue:

If I launch an OSD Task Sequence from USB, CD, or PXE the OS image is downloaded via multicast, which is what I want.

If I launch the exact same OSD Task Sequence from the Configuration Manager Client (which is set to download the same bootable WinPE then reboot into said media) the OS image is downloaded via UNICAST.

Can anyone explain why this is and if it's possible to fix it? I don't understand how running the OSD Task Sequence from the Config Client would make a difference since it's just downloading the same WinPE environment used from PXE or a Flashdrive.

what happens to a package needed for OSD if it moves to a subfolder?

we have started to have failures with our OSD.

checking logs we cannot find a reason why.

the only thing that has been discovered is that there were so many packages in the root of packages in SCCM in softwarelibrary that subfolders were created and packages were resorted.  this started several months back.

when auditing the task sequence and checking back to packages when you select browse if always goes to the root of packages as highlighted.  all the sybfolders are also listed below.

question now is if the package needed for an OSD task sequence was in the root and then move to a subfolder, does SCCM still find the package since it is in the package folder structure.

SCCM 2012 Software Center Language

Hi,

I have setup an SCCM2012 Primary Site Server (Windows 2008 R2 SP1 ) and during the SCCM setup choose English for Server and German, French and Dutch for Client. When I now distribute the OS (Win7 SP1) with German language to the client everything is ok,, but the SCCM language is english. I think, the SCCM Agent (Software Center) is also than available in German.

Do you have the same error or what are your experience?

Applications Do Not Deploy To Server 2008 R2 During Task Sequence - Execution status received: 2 (Application is not required on the client )

Hi All,

I'm having an issue when deploying any application during the task sequence for Server 2008 R2 Standard using SCCM 2012 RTM.  The same applications work fine when deployed during TS to Windows 7.  The SMSTS.log file indicates that the application is not required:

I've checked the following:

  • Application Requirements are correct.  The same thing happens with correct OS requirements or with no requirements.
  • The applications CAN be deployed via SCCM after the Task Sequence to the system
  • The package is set to allow install during TS without advertisement

The strange thing is that the application deployments worked fine during Build/Capture.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Try to install Windows 8 Enterprise x86 on an HP ElitePAD 900 i get an Error 0x80040005 when the ElitePAD read the task sequence smsts.log.

SCCM 2012 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 server on  the all site servers.

Why does the OSD have problem with the BIOS date and time?

From the web:

I finally found a forum post where someone had a
similar issue with the client BIOS time and date not being correct. I checked
this for my server, and after setting the time correct my task sequence would
load!
Seems that the client reports the BIOS time when talking to the
Certificate Authority, and when the time is wrong the client is not allowed to
go on.

Cannot PXE boot 32-bit and 64-bit hardware at the same time

$

I have ConfMgr 2012 R2, but this same problem occured also with SP1.

The main issue is, that 32-bit hardware clients are pulling 64-bit boot images. If I remove 64bit boot image from DP, everything works fine, but then, 64-bit hardware will stay pending for 64-bit boot image forever.

So this means without jerking around with boot image availibility, I cannot deploy both architectures at the same time.

I only use All-in-1 Task Sequence, which means that image selection is inside TS (UDI pages). So I have to keep both unknown Computers in the same collection and advertise the TS there.

Primary site server restart and WDS restart does not help.

Bitlocker Not Enabling

I am having trouble getting Bitlocker to start on deployment for Win7Ent and Win8Pro

If I enable bitlocker manually from within windows it works fine

Tpm is enabled

Partitions:

BDEDisk - Boot - Primary - 350 Mb - No Drive Letter

OSDisk - Primary - 100%

Ignore "Create Bitlocker Partition" as disabled as I am using partition step for that

Is there a log I am overlooking, I cant seem to find anything in SMSTS.log but I am no expert in that log and cant seem to find any problems with anything when I do look.

Task Sequence appears to be partitioning my USB drive (the boot media)?

Hello,

I am using SCCM 2012 SP1 Beta, with MDT 2012 Update 1.  I have an MDT task sequence to deploy our reference image.  This TS works on my VM, and works on a laptop when booted from a CD.

When I boot the same media from USB (on a new Ultrabook that doesn't have an optical drive), the TS fails very early, when partitioning the disk (before the UDI Wizard comes up), and then my USB stick needs to be re-formatted, and I need to copy the boot media files onto it again.

I have done this three times now, and I am thinking that my TS is seeing my USB drive as disk 0 and formatting it?

EDIT: After booting up from the USB drive I ran DISKPART, and diskpart does not see any fixed disks.  That could be my problem. Any ideas as to why that could be? Storage drivers on my boot image? This Ultrabook does have an SSD.  Wonder if that matters?

We have workstations with built-in multi-card readers (for SD cards), which during deployment end up being assigned drive letters before/lower than the hard drive.  Using a task sequence, is there a way to set the hard drive as C: drive ?

Thanks

Prestaged OSD using SCCM 2012 SP1 windows Partition variable is not being set

$

Hello All  I need some assistance with a workaround.

I am using a presaged task sequence created from a working network / PXE deployment TS for windows 7.

This TS sets a variable for the OS partition called "Windows" and the value is set in the Partition Disk task.

Problem is this value is not being read from a prestaged due to the OEMMedia condition skipping this partition and format task.

Question is how do I get it to read and or set the value for that partition?

From what I have found on Google this was an issue in beta of MDT but was fixed in RTM.  I am not using MDT TS but I do have it installed. Any idea if this is a known issue with SCCM 2012 sp1 TS?

Edit: also noticed that the variable's case is different and will not let me change it.

Variable under format is "windows"  variable under Apply OS is "Windows"  when I change them to be the same then close and reopen they revert back to the above.  Are these variables case sensitive?

Failed to run Task Sequence.

An error occurred while starting the task sequence (0x8007000E)."

While OSD, picks up task sequence but fails in resolving task sequence dependencies. SMSPXE identifies device is not in database (unknown).

SMSTS.log shows

ThreadToResolveAndExecuteTaskSequence failed. Code(0x8007000E)" in SMSTS.LOG, have seen other articles suggesting failure due to lack of storage (RAM) but this task sequence has worked in past.

By the way, if I create a stand alone media, we are able to image the workstation. What has changed in the task sequence such that the workstation is unable to download policies due to lack of storage (RAM) on workstation. Workstation has 2 GB of RAM.

Permissions on the operating system image

When deploying an OS via bootable disc, we get an 0x80070490 error when running the task sequence to apply the operating system.  Looking at the smsts.log, it's not able to access the OS image ("unsuccessful with anonymous access" and "unsuccessful with context credentials").

Where and what permissions should we set ?  (via the OS image's Manage Access Accounts option or folder shares ?)

Thanks

2. Setting new configuration state to 3 (WSUS_CONFIG_FAILED)

P.S

I installed WSUS 3.0 SP2 and also applied the KB272011-x64

I noticed when I ran the Windows Server Update Services console, under Update Services is nothing at all. Tried Action => Connect to Server and was not successful even with the correct server name and port#

Can anyone please help me.

I'll first try to explain what i want to create here.

In our organisation we have a lot of (+/- 30) different computer models and we need to upgrade all of those BIOSes to the latest version. Sometimes the upgrade needs staging because of earlier version requirements. To make things a bit harder, we want to upgrade inside WinPE to be absolutely sure the BIOS is up-to-date before entering FullOS and continuing the TS because of BIOS requirements of some of the applications that are installed using the same TS.

Creating a "normal" TS using groups, WMI queries and nested stuff to install the BIOS upgrades is not manageable due to the sheer amount of upgrades that need to be added. I already found ways to install the upgrades using powershell or VB scripts and that's what i want to accomplish. The only thing that i am having issues with is reboots. Of course BIOS upgrades need the computer to reboot to complete it's task. Using the usual Reboot step within the TS won't work for me, as i want to use a single script to do all the work. Most of the scripts have to be repeated a few times accompanied with a TS reboot but that's not what i want. The script i want to create checks for the current BIOS version, if a newer version is available install that and reboot. After the reboot, rerun the same script using the same TS step and repeat this until no newer version is available. After that BIOS Upgrade step is complete, and the BIOS is upgraded to the latest version or the BIOS was already up-to-date resume the rest of the TS. This way we only have 1 step that does all the BIOS upgrade work for us and this keeps the TS clean and manageble.

Of course i did some digging and this is not a standard approach. Creating the script that does all the work is not the problem for me, it's handling the reboots and re-running the same TS step after a reboot. As far as my SCCM knowlegde goes, rerunning the same step is not natively supported but PLEASE correct me if i am wrong!

At this moment i am investigating the use of the built-in variable SMSTSRetryRequested and SMSTSRebootRequestedas found on technet. It clearly states that;"After the computer is restarted, the task sequence manager will rerun the same task sequence step."This should work when SMSTSRebootRequested also has been set to TRUE. Unfortunately, this doesn't work at all. I wish i could provide you with a log file and show what's happening, but i am at home atm so no logs available. If i recall correctly, the script exit's correctly and both variables are set to TRUE. It then won't restart, but exits in error and the TS halts.

I'll be able to provide more LOG info tomorrow, but if anyone has more info that could assist me in this "quest" that would be great ;))

Deploying a new OS on a managed computer

Hi,

Can we deploy OS without using PXE or boot media? I mean we have XP machines that have the SCCM agent installed, we just want to advertise a task sequence to format, install Windows 7, and migrate user profile, is it doable thid way?

Thank you

Workflow for OSD Testing

I am testing Win7 OSD with a VM. When I run through my task sequence, when it works ;-), it results in a computer in SCCM with the client installed, as expected.

When I tweak the task sequence and try it again, with the same VM, I get "There are no task sequences available to this computer." I assume this is because SCCM already knows about this computer.

I can delete the computer and re-import it, but re-typing the GUID every time I test the TS is not something that interests me.

Is there a better way?

Distribution Point Multicast and Unicast at same time

Hi,

Scenario: SCCM 2012 R2. All in one server.

The server is distribution point (PXE and Multicast enabled).

The questions are:

If any Multicast dependency fails (i.e firewall blocks ports for multicast traffic),

Does the OS image will be deployed using unicast?

Is mandatory the multicast deployment method?

Thanks!

Custom USMT for a last logged in user with Task Sequence for SCCM 2012

I have been testing all day with USMT on a test laptop. We are trying to move to zero touch in the company. Being able to capture user profile, image computer, and restore user profile.

Right now with the test, I have created an custom config.xml. I generated it using scanstate /i:migapp.xml /i:miguser.xml /genconfig:config.xml

I updated the config.xml to the distribution.

Created an task sequence

  1. Request State Store
  2. Set OSDadditionaloption
  3. Capture User Files and Settings
  4. Release State Store

Under the first option, Capture state from the computer has been selected. In the second option, I created an task variable to customize the user profile I want to recieve. Inside the variable I have inserted a command "/uel:1 /ue:* /config:"%_SMSTSMDataPath%\Packages\%_OSDMigrateUsmtPackageID%\%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%\Config.xml". In the third step, I selected "Customize how user profiles are captured" and added (Migapp.xml, Miguser.xml, and Config.xml).

After doing all of that, when task is deployed I get an error after it downloads the package to the computer.

If I leave everything normal without any configurations it works. So I know its something I missing or doing the wrong way.

Please feel free to help me!!!! HELP!!!
