SCCM2012 PXE deployment fails overnight

$

Hi

we have recently started to look at SCCM2012 for our image deployment.

Firstly, installation was a nightmare - we encountered so many issues and workarounds, but finally ended up with a usable..ish system (after about 4-5 total reinstalls)..

our remaining issue is that PXE booting now stops working overnight. (clients dont boot past the dhcp section on pxe boot, then the no boot filename received message)

to resolve it, i need to uninstall theMP, restart server, install the MP, restart, and PXE booting for clients works again.

where should i be looking to address this issue? while workable, it is not convenient to have to uninstall and reinstal this EVERY day pxe needs to be used

Best regards

Sean

Hi

I’m trying to deploy Windows 7 x64 as USB standalone media but it fails right after pressing next button on network settings dialog box. It fails with “An internal error occurred (0x8007000E). For more information, contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator”.

I guess it’s something to do with the size of variable.dat that might be too big. I’ve done a lot of testing and can’t find one specific application, package or setting that causes the TS to fail.

I have tested different parts of the TS separately with success but when putting it together it fails.

The size of variables.dat is approximately 3-4mb when it success and 14-15mb when it fails so that’s why I guess it’s because of the size.

Is there a max size for this file? 10mb or something like that?

8007000E means something like out of memory exception. The scratch size is big enough so that’s not the problem.

Does anybody have a clue on whats going wrong and what is actually stored in variables.dat?

Error during begin of task sequence, formatting drive

Hi,

Please see error below. Strange thing is that BIOS seems ok but then UEFI format not.
BIOS is for old systems, UEFI for newer but this is a vm. Why does it try to do both BIOS and UEFI and why does it fail?

The logic behind the steps in a standard ts (both bios and uefi next to each other) is not clear to me
Please advise.

Update: might be vmware drivers but they should be in the boot image x64. There is an error though eahc time on updating the boot image. Would it then make sence to delete and recreate the boot image? http://tompopov.blogspot.be/2011/07/instruction-at-0x769a7a1f-referenced.html

Application Catalog window not resizing

$

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is an SCCM or h/w tablet issue. On a Lenovo Helix 3698 tablet when I open SCCM 2012 SP1 Application Catalog I have to scroll way over to the right to see Category and Requires Approval columns and the INSTALL button even with the screen maximized. But this is the only app that does this - every other app and MS tool resizes to the window so I am not scrolling all over the place. And On a desktop in the same SCCM site the Application Catalog window resizes itself just fine.

Has anyone seen this and know how to resolve it?

SCCM Multicast =4% vs WDS Multicast =33%

Hey Guys,

Does anyone know why i might be experiancing the following

I have 10 clients all DH61BE Core i5 identical, If i mulicast them from WDS i get 27% nic usage on the clients and if i multicast them from SCCM i get 4% nic usage, All default settings and servers exactly the same spec hardware and software running 2008r2,

However i have the following table

Clients 2 5 10 40
WDS 33% 33% 27% 24%
SCCM 25% 10% 4% 2%

Im also getting hash errors from SCCM on my larger images, Just found the correct forums below is my older post.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/d8931bc4-079d-40da-af1a-d5cca0e31b30/#b4eec319-1915-4660-a421-781e3f1287c6

What is going on I wouldnt belive Microsoft would release a product that gives me errors when deploying images on such a scale, However i have had IBM and Cisco come in and they have tested everything and as the above table shows its a SCCM specific issue.

I use Mcast as I work a a University and our labs are 100+ machines in each room

SCCM 2012: exclude other versions then Internet Explorer 9 from updates

Hi,

I need to exclude other updates then Internet explorer 9 from SCCM 2012.

I found this article: http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2012/09/10/configmgr-2012-excluding-updates/ but I don't want to do this work manually. What if Internet explorer 11, 12, 13 etc comes out ...?

I've created a search which includes "Title deos not contain "Internet Explorer 10"/11 but still "Cumulative updates for Internet Explorer 10 11 etc appear.

Please advise.

Error after UEFI PXE Windows 7 OSD

$

Hi Everyone,

After imaging a PC using UEFI PXE I get an error when Windows 7 first tries to boot.  The error is from Windows Boot Manager.

Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.  To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disk and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."

3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Status: 0xc000000d

Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hello all,

I enabled PXE boot for OS deployment, at first it didn't work, but once I injected the NIC drivers, it started to work.

After I was able to Build and Capture a Windows 8.1 image, I injected all the other drivers for our laptop... after that, I was getting PXE-MOF errors again, so I removed all the drivers except for my NIC driver.   Ever since then I'm still unable to get PXE to work.

Here's the troubleshooting I've tried so far.

-      Removed all drivers, and re-added only the NIC drivers from SCCM

-      Updated the boot image distributions in SCCM

-      Replaced the boot image in WDS

-      Removed and re-added the boot images, then replaced the boot image in WDS again

-      Re-installed WDS, .NET Frameworks 3.5 (I was getting errors updating distribution points, and this fixed it)

-      removed and re-added my distribution Points and management points, also configured the PXE boot options several times on both WDS and DP

I'm getting the following error

OSD TS booting to base image

$

I have recently done a new customized win7 build, captured using capture media. (This is my first capture)

I am not using MDT

When I run my TS, it boots directly to the base image after applying drivers.

Below is the relevant portion of the TS

applying 2 - 2

I use this identical TS with a wim that was captured by the previous admin for SCCM 2007 and it deploys fine, but has outdated software in it so I am recapturing for our new environment.

If I specify to continue on error for all the steps around that phase of task sequence, I get the same results.

I cant seem to find anything in SMSTS.log to point me in the right direction, but am very new to SCCM and dont really know what to look for as SMSTS.log doesnt seem to have all of the info from the beginning of TS.

XP to Windows 7 Migration without removing CM07 Agents?

$

Hello

There are no plans to migrate our old CM07 environment to CM12 so we need to support our existing CM07 clients during the migration to CM12. We need to use a State Migration Point to migrate all XP machines to Windows 7 (replace method). The majority of the XP machines do not have a CM Agent installed so we need to deploy CM12 to these machines. However, there are a large number of XP machines thatdo have a CM07 Agent and are still required to communicate with the legacy CM07 SCCM environment for inventory and software distribution purposes.

We understand that we cannot deploy the CM12 Agent to these machines because a machine cannot have 2 different versions of the CM Agent installed at the same time.  If so, how can we migrate these machines without removing the old CM07 Agent?

Thanks
Scott

Standalone USB media not installing applications

Hello,

When staging a machine with standalone media (usb) applications are not installed, when staging via PXE with the same Task Sequence all applications are installed during the staging.

I checked the setting "allow this application to be installed from the install application task sequence action..."

Errors I find in smsts.log are:

Cannot PXE boot 32-bit and 64-bit hardware at the same time

$

I have ConfMgr 2012 R2, but this same problem occured also with SP1.

The main issue is, that 32-bit hardware clients are pulling 64-bit boot images. If I remove 64bit boot image from DP, everything works fine, but then, 64-bit hardware will stay pending for 64-bit boot image forever.

So this means without jerking around with boot image availibility, I cannot deploy both architectures at the same time.

I only use All-in-1 Task Sequence, which means that image selection is inside TS (UDI pages). So I have to keep both unknown Computers in the same collection and advertise the TS there.

Primary site server restart and WDS restart does not help.

Need help copying my user profile to default user profile in my Task Sequence. How do you do it in SCCM?

$

0

Hi, I can copy the logged in user profile over to the default user profil without any problems outside of SCCM.

But SCCM has a totally different way of doing in.

eg. Trying to use the SCCM way.

1. I login into my reference machine with the admin account.

2. I customise the admin account with the settings that I want to apply to all of my users.

3. Then I capture the machine using the SCCM Task Media disk.

4. Sysprep runs in the O/S and the machine reboots and the capture process begins.

5. The image is captured and placed in the location I specify.

Now when I want to deploy the image I obviously want the image to have been already copied. But it's not. So I need to find a way to copy it.

There is an option in the Apply Operating System Step that allows you to use an unattended or Sysprep answer file. But you have to create a package and specify a filename.

Has anyone got this to work and if so can you help me please.

Thanks

SCCM 2012 SP1 OSD slow on some computers, fast on others

$
0
0

Environment:

SCCM 2012 SP1 running on VM (version 5.0.7804.1000)

Single Primary Site  - DP & SQL on site server

No additional DP's or remote DP's

DP = HTTP selected for DP communication

Deploying only Win7 x64 images

Dell computer clients

Boundaries setup using Active Directory Site

Boot media - USB key (no PXE)

Scenario:

Started rolling out Windows 7 x64 images about 2 months ago. We have 200 clients upgraded to the new SCCM 2012 environment. Typical image time is about 60 minutes. Recently, I imported drivers for the new Dell 9020 All In One computer and added the NIC driver to the boot image. A couple days later, I noticed that some machines pretty much stall (i.e. takes 2-3 days to download WIM file I would guess) while other computers still image in 60 minutes or less. Here's the thing, I have two Dell E6400 laptops at my desk, one images fast and one images slow. I also have a Dell E6430 and a Dell 9010 All In One desktop, both use the same NIC driver - E6430 images fast and 9010AIO images slow.

Symptoms:

When the Task Sequence Wizard starts, I can tell whether it will be a fast computer. When the wizard says "Retrieving policy for this computer...", it usually takes about 20 seconds on the slow computers. Also, it is slow when processing "Resolving task sequence dependencies" before the "Running Action: Applying Operating System" boot.wim download tries to start. The slow computer will take about 15-20 minutes before it gets to 1% for the boot.wim download.

Things I've tried:

  1. Removed 9020 All In One drivers
  2. Rebuilt the boot.wim from Windows ADK
  3. Imported a new bare Win7 operating system image (Win7R3.wim)
  4. Created new task sequence - very basic
  5. Update DP for all driver packages and task sequence packages
  6. Verified certificates are unblocked and has a valid expiration date (site signing, no PKI)
  7. Tried switching network jacks (fast computer to slow computer)
  8. Removed computer entries in CM12 console and imported fresh entries.
  9. Verified Network Access Account (NAA) account is valid and can get to the SCCM server. Removed and added back in.
  10. Verified ipconfig and diskpart from WinPE - gets IP address and lists the hard drive without issue
  11. Enabled/disabled "Allow clients to connect anonymously" on the DP
  12. Rebooted the CM12 server.
  13. Tried using DRVLOAD during WinPE to load different NIC drivers, but couldn't verify it was using those imported drivers other than the successful message after DRVLOAD command.

SMSTS.log

Looking at the smsts.log, it looks pretty clear with no errors. I compared the slow computer smsts.log with the fast computer smsts.log, both look very similar. Attached is a smsts.log file for a very basic task sequence (i.e. no app's or packages added, basically just format and load OS).

Suggestions?

What am I missing here or what else should I verify?

It looks like the default WinPE already has the Intel 82579LM driver included. I'm still leaning towards the drivers as an issue but looking for other things to check. We haven't performed any installs on the server recently nor have we installed any windows updates in the past month.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello All,

I am trying to figure out how to move a pc from a required deploy collection at the end of a prestaged OSD.

This way it will not be required and cause any accidents after the deploy finishes.  I want to avoid manual moves as much as I can.

Any suggestions?

PXE Boot - Secondary server

$

Hi ,

I am facing issues while deploying OS from secondary site server .

Here is my issue :

I have created OS image , Boot images and deployed it to all distribution points .

Enabled PXE support and all Unknown computer support on secondary server DP.

Changes Scope options in DHCP to reflect the secondary server values .

Created task sequence to deploy my image to all unknown computers and created optional advertisement . Now the issue is when I PXE boot my computer I can see the communication to my secondary server , As soon as I hit F12 button I got the below message .  smsboot\x64\abortpxe.com PXE Boot aborted. Booting to next device... PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found

I have restarted Windows deployment service in secondary server and reboot the server as well .

The strange thing is if I change the option 66 value in DHCP to primary server it is working pretty well . If I change it back to secondary server the same issue .

SMSPxe.log was not much helpful as I cant see any error message. All I can see is "No Advertisments found " .

I am running SCCM 2012 on server 2012 operating system . Does anyone have any idea on where I should look to resolve this problem or to dig deeper?

Thanks in Advance .

Cheers,

Kishore

Hi,

I am using SCCM 2012 R2.

I have created the capture media using x86 boot image. The PC to be captured is Windows7x86PRO Spanish.

The problem is that sysprep remains executing (aprox 1 hour before I manually shutdown), and never restarts the PC for image capture.

The errors at smsts.log are:

"Site-Based" Boot Media Works / "Dynamic" Boot Media Gives "MP Location Returned an Empty Site Code"

Good Morning Guys -

This morning we had some issues testing OSD builds.  We used a USB drive we made into boot media a few days ago to boot up an "Unknown Computer."  After clicking the initial "Next," we got the error 0x80004005 instead of no task sequences being listed.

I tried re-creating the media (Dynamic), but still got the same error.  After research, I re-created the media once more with the same settings - except - used "Site-Based" instead of "Dynamic" and it worked as I am now displayed a list of task sequences to run.

Why would "Site-Based" media work and "Dynamic" media not?

Below are some environment details as well as other things I examined...

  • Primary server is remote to location, but do have a local secondary
  • Boot Image Config I used on all 3 times I tried above:

          - Boot Image: Selected Image

          - Distribution Point - Selected Local Secondary

          - Management Point - Selected Primary Server (only option)

  • IP was retrieved on machine via DHCP.  After opening a command prompt, I could ping both primary and secondary servers
  • Verified machine's IP (via DHCP) was in a boundary (It's Subnet was entered).  Boundary was assigned to the proper local secondary

In the log file, there was only a couple of lines which noted errors (besides PXE which we don't use)

Here is the smsts.log file just in case - names were changed for security...

Any ideas?  Thank Guys!

Task sequence: Windows not joining domain via "apply network settings".

Hi,

We are setting up our production sccm 2012 R2 server. Now our LAB-setup works fine and so does the Windows 7 task sequence in this lab.

I copied over the task sequence to the production environment, but there it won't join a pc to the domain.
I did read this post and it is confusing me. The "apply network settings" always worked fine for me, suddenly it does not.
Should I or shouldn't I use it?
When I use the "Join Domain", I get an error 0x000000032.

Note that the computer object already exists but this should not prevent the computer from joining the domain right?

Note: I didn't found the smsts.log file anymore. All the logfiles are under c:\windows\ccm ... but no logs referring, so I can't' see what went wrong.

Please advise.
