MDT deploying WIM to D drive by default

$

Hi,

We have SCCM 2012 R2 and MDT 2013. When I create MDT task sequence in SCCM it defaults to D drive instead of C drive even with the captured image.

Can someone please suggest if there is bug?

CaptureMedia won't boot

Hi, just created a capture media (an .iso file) from sccm 2012 r2 following the guide below:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/79465d90-4831-4872-96c2-2062d80f5583#BKMK_CreateCaptureMedia

Mounted the iso to the dvd on a VM (VMware) and connected at power-on. In the BIOS dvd is the first boot device.

When the VM boots it did not boot from the capturemedia.iso but straight booted from HDD.

The same winpe boot image is used which works fine in pxe boot.

What I had done wrong?

thanks in advance

SCCM 2012 SP1 / Windows 8 | CopyProfile in unattend.xml copying systemprofile instead of Administrator

$

My main question is what could be causing this? And I'm hoping someone might be able to direct me on how to resolve the issue. I am having a difficult time finding anyone else that has had this same issue. This process works without any issues with Windows 7.

  • I have used Capture media from SCCM 2012 SP1 to capture my reference image while logged in as Administrator. I've attempted this from our production environment as well as from a freshly installed lab environment
  • I have attempted to create a new local account during the Windows 8 installation of the reference PC, enabled local Administrator, logged in as Administrator and removed the other local account, restarted, captured the image.
  • I have entered Audit mode without creating a local account and only configured the image as Administrator, then captured the reference image.
  • The machine is in a workgroup.
  • I have created fresh task sequences from scratch to rule anything out as far as that goes.
  • I am using Windows 8 Enterprise ISOs from MSDN - both x86 and x64. I have this issue with both installations.
  • I have confirmed that no other accounts exists on the reference install. I have double-checked the registry as well.

The following line shows that it can't find the administrator profile. What would cause this? Maybe I'm missing something else in the log, but I'm about to go crazy over this.
2013-01-03 07:19:57, Info                         [msoobe.exe] Admin profile S-1-5-21-804224971-1806944547-4180287174-500 was not found.

OSD on bitockered machine: "not enough storage on disk"

Hi,

Sometimes my task sequence (sccm 2012 r2) shows "not enough storage on disk", then a diskpart helps. Probably relate to bitlocked drive. Strange thing is that it doesn't happen all the time on existing bitlockered machines.

Please advise on best practises if it's a good idea to implement diskpart, where in task sequence and how (Windows 7).

OSD Bitlocker partition, unable to remove drive letter.

$

Hi,

With ConfigMgr 2007/2012 I used the bdehdcfg tool to partition the drive after the OS installation was done. This creates the bitlocker partition at the end of the drive, marked as system and boot, without a drive letter.

With ConfigMgr 2012 R2 there is a new option "pre-provision BitLocker" before windows is installed and "Enable BitLocker" at the end. This benefit of this option is basically zero encryption time, compared to the old method I was using which would take about an hour on a good sized SSD.

This new method creates a 350mb system reserved partition at the start of the drive, marks as system and boot AND assigns a drive letter. In the task sequence the "Partition Disk 0 - BIOS" task is set to "do not assign a drive letter to this partition". It seems that checking/unchecking this box does not have any effect whatsoever.

I've tried with various scripts to remove this default partition but unfortunately no success. The scripts work when run from an administrative command prompt on the desktop, however when running during a task sequence I get an access denied error (4005)

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove the drive letter from this default partition and/or how to get the task sequence to actually abide to the checkbox at the partition stage?

Thanks!

How to Apply Windows 8´s themepack during Task Sequence

I was trying to find any info, how to apply themepack with TS, during Windows 8.1 deployment, but there is no info I could find.

I´m aming to customize fully the look of Windows 8.1, I aleady have different layout profiles pushing to tablets and PCs, but I also want to fully redo and deploy my own theme. I have W8.deskthemepack file saved (480 kb size), but how I could apply it with run command line as default theme? It must also cantain the lock screen.

I know about desk.cpl but I have no idea how to add switches around it.

Importing a Boot Image from another Site.

Hello all,

I wanted to know if I am able to add another Boot Image from my test environment to my production environment?

I added new network drivers the other day to my boot image, and all of a sudden our task sequence will not boot, not even with the workstations the TS used to work on.

I attempted to delete all drivers we added and re update the DP, but no luck at all.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Heres the error that I keep getting

What I need is to deploy this image to 400 computers, but I made a new device collection with only 3 laptops for testing. Will someone please help me out on this? I would like someone to remote in and try to figure what I'm doing wrong. I wouldn't mind giving a few dollars through paypal for helping. Thank you!

Applications not longer install on UDI Deployment after R2 upgrade

Hey guys,

Seem to have an issue here.  In 2012 SP1, my task sequences were working great, and UDI was installing all the selected applications.

After the R2 upgrade, I re-built my task sequences and boot images, but now the OSD sequence doesn't install the selected application from the UDI wizard.  They show up in ZTICoalesce.log and in BDD.log, but when you go to AppDiscovery.log, the applications suddenly aren't there.  Instead, it throws an error of  "E r r o r   2 :   P r o d u c t   v e r s i o n   r e g i s t r y   n o t   f o u n d"  and  "A p p D i s c o v e r y  E r r o r   1 :   F i l e   o p e n   f a i l e d

 L i n e :   0  R e a s o n :   T h e   s p e c i f i e d   p a t h   i s   i n v a l i d . "

Can't seem to figure out why this is happening - I even created a new MDT package and task sequence, and the issue still shows up.

Specific model suddenly fails on any "Application" install, packages work fine

$

We have been testing and tweaking our Task Sequence for several weeks now and had previously imaged Lenovo T420s's without issue.  Yesterday we rebuilt a T420s, a T430s, and Optiplex 760 and a Hyper-V VM.  Both T420's fail when they get to a step to install an Application (we disabled the initial app that was failing and experienced the same behavior on any of the Application installs).

Some snippets from smsts.log:
Right before the failure we get "Policy evaluation failed, hr=0x87d00267" followed by "Failed to run the action: Install App123.  Download Failed (Error: 87D00267; Source: CCM)"

In the CIDownloader.log at the same time we see:
GenerateDCMUrlPrefix failed (0x87d00269)
CIDownloaderJob({GUID}): DownloadPackages failed (0x87d00269).
CCIDownloaderJob::StartDownload - MP not found - will retry.
CIDownloaderJob({GUID})::CCIdownloader Job::QuueueRetry - Job is set to fail immediately on error - no retries.
CIDownloaderJob({GUID}): QueueRetry failed (0x87d00267).

In the LocationServices log we see multiple entries of the following about two minutes or so before the failure:
Unable to retrieve AD forest + domain membership
Failed to refresh security settings over MP with error 0x8007054b
No security settings update detected
Retrieved lookup MP [PrimarySiteServerFQDN] from Registry
Attempting to retrieve lookup MP(s) from AD
Using default DNS suffix ourdomain.com
Attempting to retrieve default management point from DNS
Failed to retrieve DNS service record using _mssms_mp_p10._tcp.ourdomain.com lookup DNS returned error 9852
..
Failed to resolve 'MP_P10' from WINS

Now having said all this, there are a few "packages" that download and install immediately before the "application" without issue.  As soon as it hits the application it fails right away.  The applications as it stands are standalone tasks within the TS with a single application specified.

The driver set has not changed for any of the models and are being applied correctly.  Again this issue only affecs the T420s. (haven't tested ALL models yet but of the ones we have tested so far this one fails consistently).  Again, a few weeks ago we were able to build the T420s fine.

I ran a continous ping to the local MP during the packages installing correctly and the applicaiton failure and it stayed consistent with a <1 ms response.

The only tweaks we have made since last installing (that i can recall for sure) was removing the CCMHOSTNAME parameter from the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr step as the clinet was intermittently flipping over to "internet" and failing to download package. This issue happened on ALL models we tested. Once we removed that and left only SMSMP=MPFQDN SMSCACHSIZE=7000 CCMLOGMAXSIZE=1000000 builds starting working again...that is until we tested the T420s.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas on what to look for to diagnose this?  We have tested several times and the issue is persistent each time on this model.  We have removed the object from the ConfigMgr database and AD and rebuilt with the same result.  Again we also tested multiple T420s's and get the same result on both.  I am thoroughly stumped on what could be causing this.

still having troubl with capture media

Have created the capture media from sccm2012 r2. Prepared the reference machine then dis-join the domain. Reset local administrator's password to blank. Mount the iso to the cd/dvd on the reference machine (a VMware VM). The wizard auto-runs.

Completed the wizard. However, nothing happens - no capture task sequence starts. I am sure not the access account as I browse to the destination folder using the same credential entered in the wizard.

One thing I noticed with the capture media created is - in the create task sequence media wizard completed successfully page there is a line says SHA256 checksums. Will this causing problem?

OSD SCCM 2012 R2: 1 logfile per deploy?

$

Hi,

I followed this guide to have central logfiles for OS deploy: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/newthread?category=systemcenter2012configurationmanager&forum=configmanagerosd

This created a folder with smsts.log, smsts-dateofdeploy.log and wpeinit.log.

My questions:

1.I probably don't need wpeinit.log(?)

2.what's the difference between smsts-dateofdeploy.log and smsts.log?

3.can I use the smsts-dateofdeploy.log through the whole task sequence as reference log?
That would mean I' d use this command cmd.exe /c copy %_smstslogpath%\smsts-*.log L:\SuccessFull\%_smstsmachinename% to gather the logfile

and that option (3.) would be the solution for me?

Please advise.

I'm trying to embed updates into an image and when I go into Operating System Images > Schedule Updates and select all software updates I get the message "Not all selected software updates are currently available on current site.  Distribute the updates to the site first and then perform the operation."  It doesn't tell me which ones aren't distributed.  I don't know if I need to go into software updates and download every update or what I need to do here.

SCCM 2012 R2 - Error 0x800700C1

$

Hi All,

For the past few days I'm experiencing "0x800700C1" errors during the Build & Capture task sequences for an older OS image (Windows 2003 x86) which used to work flawlessly in the past. After detailed investigation of the logs it turns out that the task sequence is failing right after the "Perpare OS" step which is also responsible for implementing the WinPE boot image and the boot sector changes prior the capturing step. The associated error messages within the logs are indicating few times the following:

"is not a valid Win32 application"

While this didn't make too much sense initially, digging down the logs a bit further shown that the problem occurs right after the following command is engaged:

"C:\_SMSTaskSequence\WinPE\SMS\bin\i386\bootsect.exe" /NT60 SYS /MBR

I tested the command manually and it certainly gives back the same error which makes me think that the included within the x86 boot image bootsect.exe binary is not x86 compatible or there is another problem with it.

While my SCCM Boot Images are customized with very few boot drivers, there were no other major changes applied to them and furthermore the same issue was experienced also with the unmodified x86 boot image so this whole problem relates back to the Windows 8.1 ADK distribution.

Anybody else experiencing similar problems ?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update:

In the meantime I made an additional investigation with the bootsect.exe file directly from the Windows 8.1 x86 ISO images (same as the one with WinPE 5.0) and it turns out that this version of the file just can't be used on Windows 2003 x86 OS instances. The same "is not a valid Win32 application" error appears with it.

I can confirm that there is no problem with bootsect.exe binary from the Windows 8.0 ISO images, so most probably the solution to my original problem will be to replace manually the file within the original WinPE 5.0 image with an older version.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update:

I figured out why the issue is happening even with older WinPE images. The problem resides with SCCM and more specifically with the modifications of the boot images. It doesn't matter whether or not you would be using old or new image. When you upload the boot image to SCCM, it automatically includes the "SMS" folder in it's internal structure which contains the new version of the "bootsect.exe" and also other binaries related to the boot modification processes. During the "Perpare OS" step the SCCM client copies over the referenced boot image and extracts some of the files out of this folder to the ""C:\_SMSTaskSequence\WinPE\" location. Because the provided "bootsect.exe" version is simply incompatible with W2K3 OS, the task just fails despite of the provided older WinPE boot image. So all in all it seems that the problem cannot be resolved without manual intervention at the boot image, but more testing will be required before making any final conclusions. For the time being I would say that SCCM 2012 R2 cannot be considered as fully compatible for managing W2K3 OSD procedures.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Workaround:

And so the temporary (maybe even long-term) solution is to replace the bootsect.exe file with an older version then continue with the capture step as per the defined SCCM task sequence. Now the only difficulty was to decide whether to change the boot image directly through DISM or to go for a more comfortable way and implement a global change that would reflect all boot images. Normally I wouldn't go with global changes easily but this time I went for the latter by replacing the the ADK 8.1 based bootsect.exe file at its installation point which in my case is:

E:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Deployment Tools\x86\BCDBoot\

The reason why I went this way was to ensure that whenever I'm updating my boot images with new drivers, the "correct" bootsect.exe file would get integrated instead of the latest version. Furthermore whenever there is a requirement to redistribute the images to DP's, the boot images will get updated/reconstructed and therefore the bootsect.exe binary would be reinserted, so the manual modification of the WIM files is not really a solution.

Of course this global modification method is absolutely unsupported, so if anybody reading this would decide to make similar implementation, he/she will take the responsibility over potential risks and consequences. I haven't tested the older version of the bootsect.exe file with newer OS versions (8.1 / 2012R2) so it is important to note that there is a big potential risk involved with the above described modification as it could break build/capture/deploy tasks for the new OS's. Perhaps I'll give it a test and see how things would work.

So all in all let's hope that MS would release a fixed version of bootsect.exe with their next ADK release.

SCCM MDT integrated: 1 logfile for success, 1 for failed?

Hi,

Please see this post for question about central logging.
I did invent the wheel indeed. Now I'm making an SCCM MDT task sequence with built-in central logging (ref.: http://scriptimus.wordpress.com/2011/05/31/mdt-2010-storing-log-files-centrally).

I edited the customsettings.ini and changed SLShare=\\server\logfolder
Now my question: I would like to have 1 folder for success, 1 for failed. In other words, the success step will occur when _SMSTSLastActionSucceeded=true

=> How can make it write to \\server\logfolder\success for success \\server\logfolder\failed for failed task sequence?

Please advise.

SCCM 2012 Task Sequence Failure 0x8007000e

I have an SCCM 2012 RTM setup that was previously working fine. Now it will not Deploy any task sequences at all giving me the error 0x800700e. I have read up on this error and it seems to be that there is not enough disk space.

1 TB is not enough? We all got issues then. I know this isnt the problem. I read on technet that it may be because of the updates being too large. I have disabled the updates. Same problems. This happens with any deployment or capture using TS. Even the ones that have worked fine for ages.

The only change I have made is installing MDT and uninstalling it makes no difference at all.

Here is SMSTS.log:

Please help. Its so frustrating because literally last week there were no problems at all....

media based deployment for Refresh and New Computer

Hi ,

I am looking for some pointers for using media based deployment for refresh scenario (xp to Win 7 with USMT) and new computer deployment (without OS).

Setup we have is Configuration manager 2012 R2 integrated with MDT 2013.

I need some pointers on below:

 - Since its winxp to win 7 and its boot images that comes with (ADK 8.1) confi. manager 2012 R2 doesn't support it. Article says we need WINPE 3.1 for such scenario. Since its MDT 2013 (again ADK 8.1 boot images only), how do generate WinPE 3.x for MDT based boot image?

- Since it is going to be 2 deployment scenarios, do i need to have 2 separate TS (one for new computer and 2nd for USMT based deployment for refresh scenaro) or is there anyway to manage both scenarios with 1 TS?

- If we need to have 2 TS, do we need to have 2 media created or 1 media can have both TS (like in MDT we have selectionprofile with multiple TS and then media created including both TS)

Looking for some options to deal such scenario. Thanks

Regards,
