UDI based USMT for win XP To Win 7. What variables need to be defined in Cs.ini

Hi,

I am looking for some pointers to configure UDI (created mdt based TS) to do capture and restore for user data\Profiles during refresh scenario from Win XP to Win and Win 7 to Win 7. It is Config manager 2012 R2 with MDT 2013 Integration.

What variables need to be defined in customsettinng.ini to do USMT through UDI. Is it mandatory to have User state migration point in place? since i can see in UDI that we can map some network path (not sure has to be user state migration point share) , USB and local. Any pointers will be appreciated. I believe referesh scenario can only work if it starts from within OS and will not work from WinPE (boot system from 'Boot media' or 'offline media')? I need to login to windows and run the TS either as Deply advertisment or launch it from 'boot media' or 'offline media'. any pointers.  'Thanks

Pre-provisioned Bitlocker

SCCM 2012 SP1 with MDT 2013 doing Windows 7 SP1 images. Can somebody who successfully sets up Bitlocker give me some guidance here. I'm looking at Niall's Noob article http://www.niallbrady.com/2012/09/23/how-can-i-pre-provision-bitlocker-in-winpe-for-windows-8-deployments-using-configuration-manager-2012-sp1/ about using pre-provisioning.  I realise about setting up AD, and turning on the TPM chip etc. , but my confusion is with the BDE variables needed if using the MDT client task sequence which I use

I see articles about adding variable into the customsettings.ini such as

bdedriverletter=S

bdedrivesize = 30000

etc. but isn't this handled by the MDT TS which creates hidden partition for Bitlocker anyway ??

I have also seem some articles saying NOT to use the MDT version of enable bitlocker step which I believe runs ztibde rather to use the SCCM step enable bitlocker

Also if using pre-provisioning which seems to make sense is it sensible to put the client files such as the Dell CCTK into the boot image

Thanks

Group Policy refresh after a task sequence has completed

Hi

I would like to force a Group policy refresh after my OSD task sequence has completed.  At the moment, my TS completes, I get the Deployment Complete window and I click on Start Windows.  Windows starts up but my Computer based Group Policies have not applied so I need to restart the machine immediately.

My question is, how can I refresh group policy but still retain the Deployment Complete window ?  I have tried using theSMSTSPostAction Task Sequence variable to set a gpupdate /force to run after the TS completes but it just hangs.  I set it to gpupdate /force /wait:0and this seems to run and I get my Deployment Complete window, but my Group Policy still isn't applying.  I have tried setting theSMSTSPostAction Task Sequence variable to shutdown /r which reboots the machine, but then i don't get the Deployment Complete window at the end of the build.

Any other ideas ?

Cheers

Application installation stops OSD Task Sequence

Hi!

I have an application based on a MSI-file.
After I upgraded SCCM 2012 to SCCM 2012 R2
the OSD task sequence reboots after the application is
installed and instead of continuing the task sequence the
computer boots into the login screen.

I have tried all the diffrent settings in the image below, the only
diffrence it makes is that the application installation hangs (wihout reboot)
even though the application gets installed.

Hello - we have a build and capture task we have created and used it once as required.

However, this task is no longer deployed to any collections what so ever, but is still

presenting itself as available during PXE boot? It is not linked, is not required - have tried adding

and removing from a collection but still appears :( Does anyone have any ideas they could share?

SCCM 2012 - Drivers

Hi,

I am using SCCM 2012 SP1 version, Some specific drivers are working only if I reimport.

Is there any specific reason or is it a bug. Any advice please

EX: I imported drivers for 6550B model almost a month before and it worked at that time. When I tried it today, no drivers got updated. It worked fine only after I reimport the drivers.

Sysprep failed on Capture Windows 8.1 .wim image

ConfMgr 2012 R2. Creating image file from Hyper-V guest machine. Prepare OSstep fails with the error code 16389. Unable to sysprep the machine, hr=80004005

In smsts I see:

Sysprep did not complete successfully.
Unable to sysprep the machine 0x80004005.
Sysprep´ing the machine failed 0x80004005.

Sysprep provides error code 0x8007045b in it´s own log.

Same enviroment, same structure of Capture TS and B&C of Win7 works fine. With W8, I tried both, using install.wim as a source, or installation media files as a source.

Apply Image error - Bcdboot failed!

Hi @ all,

first some information about the environment. We use:

SCCM 2012 Sp1 CU2, SQL 2008 R2

I try to deploy a windows 7 machine (desktop) in a branch office. the necessary files will be downloaded from a DP based on windows 7!!

When I boot from an USB stick (64-bit, bootable only, no standalone media) and start a Task Sequence, after downloading the os-image, during the "apply-step" I get the following error.

The smsts.log says:

System partition not set ApplyOperatingSystem 10.02.2014 18:51:39 1596 (0x063C)
Unable to find the partition that contains the OS boot loaders. Please ensure the hard disks have been properly partitioned
Unspecified error (Error: 80004005; Source: Windows) ApplyOperatingSystem 10.02.2014 18:51:39 1596 (0x063C)

Bcdboot failed! bcdboot.exe C:\Windows /l de-DE failed (15299)
stdout:
Failure when attempting to copy boot files.
stderr:

Installation of image 1 in package A120038D failed to complete..
Unspecified error (Error: 80004005; Source: Windows)

In the TS the hard disk will be cleaned and formatted. I also cleaned the hard disk manually before starting the TS > same error.

Another Task Sequqnce (only another os-image-wim file) for laptop in the same branch office, same room, same subnet and same switch will be deployed successfully.

To try the deployment via PXE it´s very difficult, because the deployment will be started over very slow WAN network connection.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance!

Offline Servicing Failed - Unable to delete existing mount directory

$

Hi All,

I'm unable to run offline servicing on my install image, as the deletion of a previous mount point fails (from OfflineServicingMgr.log):

Deleting file \\?\C:\ConfigMgr_OfflineImageServicing\GRO000E7\ImageMountDir\Windows\Fonts\trebucbi.ttf, FAILED, Win32 Error = 1168

Failed to remove previously existing staging folder C:\ConfigMgr_OfflineImageServicing\GRO000E7, GLE = 1168

Failed to remove the staging folder C:\ConfigMgr_OfflineImageServicing, GLE = 1168

I've tried:

  • DISM /cleanup-wim - returns all stale files removed, but the directory remains
  • DISM /cleanup-mountpoints - returns all stale files removed, but the directory remains
  • Manually deleting the folder - which returns the error 0x80070490 Element not found

I presume I could work around this by deleting the existing image in SCCM, re-creating using the WIM, then it should have a different packageID and hence use a different mount point for offline servicing?

I'd rather not do this, so if anyone has any ideas on something else to try, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Iain

Enable shell

Hi ,

I am using WinPe 3.1 and not able to enable shell support. 'EnableLabShell' value goed back to 'False'. I don;t get any error during saving it to 'TRUE' but still it shows be 'False' Once i'll close wbemtest and reopen the instance again.

I am following http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/dn387582.aspx

  1. You can enable a command shell in the boot image to debug and troubleshoot it in Windows PE. Use the following steps to enable the command shell.

    1. In the Configuration Manager console, click Software Library.

    2. In the Software Library workspace, expand Operating Systems, and then click Boot Images.

    3. Find the new boot image in the list and identify the package ID for the image. You can find the package ID in the Image ID column for the boot image.

    4. From a command prompt, type wbemtest to open the Windows Management Instrumentation Tester.

    5. Type \\<SMS Provider Computer>\root\sms\site_<sitecode> in Namespace, and then click Connect.

    6. Click Open Instance, type sms_bootimagepackage.packageID="<packageID>", and then click OK. For packageID, enter the value that you identified in step 3.

    7. Click Refresh Object, and then click EnableLabShell in the Properties pane.

    8. Click Edit Property, change the value to TRUE, click Save Property, and then exit the Windows Management Instrumentation Tester.

HTA Tools?

Are there any HTA tools written with PowerShell?   I want to create a custom HTA file within CM2012 to do our Windows 7 deployment and I know PowerShell so I wanted to use a PS HTA.

And either way can any of you direct me to a useful HTA tool?

Hi Guys,

We are setting up SCCM 2012 R2. We would like to ask if SCCM can Deploy OS on networks behind a router.

Say, SCCM network is on 10.0.0.0 /16.

And the PXE clients are on 192.168... /24 behind routers. Can SCCM deploy OS on PXE boot?

Kindly explain. If there's tips I need to consider in deploying Windows 7 kindly include

Thanks in advance

MDT divers hardware

I have a very diverse group of PC's - various ages, various motherboards, various on-board adapters - audio, video, NIC or slot-based or even combinations - on-board audio that has been disabled and an add-on audio card put into play.  I would like to use MDT to create a Win 7 image that can be deployed onto this mixed bag.  How do I deal with the drivers issue as I have already tried a few systems and I have run into driver issues - Windows 7 doesn't have the driver and often the driver can't even be identified that easily - some obscure on-board adapter for which the manual and disks have long disappeared.  How do i go about dealing with this situation in the context of MDT?

User input during task sequence

Hi Guys

We are building machines in SCCM 2012 environment for three different groups (ABC, DEF, XYZ) using same task sequence. We got a requirement to add machines to respective Security groups OU in Actice Directory after machine build in completed.

I am looking to get a popup for deployment engineer at the start of tasksequence to enter group code ( (ABC, DEF or XYZ). Based on the value, a custom variable is assigned.

Later, With in the task sequence based on query,  we can automatically move machine to requisite group.

I have read other posts where we can use HTA to achieve similar. Because of strict Change in place, I am not allowed to modify boot image.  Is there any other way without using HTA?

At the moment, we are using below script to get a popup for Computer name. Is it possible to get a similar script to get a popup during task sequence for creating and adding value to custom variable?

set env = CreateObject("Microsoft.SMS.TSEnvironment")

'Set the OSDComputerName variable to the detected name assuming this is a known computer

env("OSDComputerName") = env("_SMSTSMachineName")

'If the detected name contains "MININT" then this is an unknown computer so ask for a name
If InStr(1,env("OSDComputerName"),"MININT",1) then
Name = inputbox("Rename Computer" ,"Please enter the new Computer name below:",env("OSDComputerName"),400,0)
    env("OSDComputerName") = Name
    env("ComputerName") = Name
    env("HostName") = Name
End If

Thanks for your help

Server Engineer

is the Sysprep step needed?

We want to to build a new Windows 7 OSD.   We were going to do a build/capture and get the image file that way. Then use that image file when we PXE boot up and build our OSD.

I have a CM2012 manual that talks about using the SysPrep tool.  Is this step needed in the Task Sequence if we use our method I listed above?

An error occured while retrieving policy for this computer 0x80092004

$

Good morning!

I have recently been having some issues getting my OSD working correctly.

It all started after the server which houses DPM and SCCM was refusing to start the SQL service because of an invalid certificate that was missing the private key. After I finally removed the key and all the registry value for it in SQL server, I could finally fire up SQL server again.

However, since then, I am unable to perform an OSD and I have been troubleshooting this issue for many weeks now.

I have low level knowledge of SCCM 2012 R2, but I did set this box up myself and had all aspects (OSD, Software deployment, driver deployment etc) working perfectly fine in native mode and was just about ready to start deploying images out when SQL died.

I am still able to push out the client in native mode perfectly fine, I just can't deploy an OS task sequence.

When I pxe boot the client, it boots fine and then prompts for the admin password, as soon as I enter the admin password, it fails with "An error occured while retrieving policy for this computer 0x80092004".

This is the SMSTS.log associated with this machine:

I am stumped with this issue. As I said, this is new to me, but I have so far been able to set it all up to a working state, up until this SQL issue occurred.

I look forward to your responses.

Cheers,

Kyle.

Laptop doesn't download network driver

We want to deploy images to Dell E5540 notebook. I downloaded the network drivers and imported it to my boot images, like I did with all other drivers. When I startup the laptop, start PXE boot, the machine starts and I'm able to boot to system center. But the download network driver step get skipped and the laptop restarts. Is there a way I can debug this problem or find some logs about it?

Universal Fix for Broken clients, which can be deployed through sccm or can be run on the machines individually

Hi Friends,

Often the service desk gets laptops from employees on which the client is broken or not getting policy updates

The Deskside team tries few steps

  • Reinstall the client using the cmd line
  • Run the "OSprovision" utility to add the machine back to domain
  • Run the "OSD Collection Utility " to Add the machine to a collection

However the sucess rate is less, i believe due to few reasons like, the OS image is old, missing pre requisites etc

so firstly i would like to know what all it takes to make the Client healthy, what all need to be checked to make sure it meets the pre requisites

Work around to fix the client, by remoting into the computer

Eventually i wish to build a Task Sequence which can be deployed to a collection, which will check the following

  • Does the computer meets the Pre requisites, if not it will install/reinstall the missing/corrupt pre requisites
  • installs/reinstalls the client ( wish to know how to execute the command line via task sequence, also if there is any other procedure to do the same )
  • runs the web based utility "osprovision" to add the machine if it has fallen out of domain
  • Adds the machine to appropriate collection utility
  • checks to make sure that the client is working fine after install/reinstall and is getting updates
  • Most importantly it should skip all the above steps if the client is already healthy

I am a new bee to the sccm, however i understand the concept, Please bear with me and help me step by step to complete this task,

also your idea's are most welcome for any updates/changes

Regards

Tanoj
