Unable to update boot image on distribution points.

Hello,

I am currently running SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 CU2 on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server. I recently added drivers to my default "Boot image (x64)" that is version 6.3.9600.1684 and OS version 10.0.105.86.0. When I try to update the distribution points, after making the additions, I receive an error in the wizard. Every part of the process reports errors.

I checked the permissions for the folder \\servername\SMS_site\OSD\bin and the "System" account has full control. If there is something else I need to check in this aspect, please don't hesitate to make a suggestion.

I removed the Boot Image from all Content Locations and distributed it back. The Boot Image successfully distributed and I am able to successfully boot to WinPE from PC models that already worked. However, the PC's needing those new drivers still start WinPE and then reboot because my boot image is still missing those NIC drivers.

I thought about performing the steps in this article:

https://www.niallbrady.com/2013/03/20/pxe-boot-failure-after-upgrading-to-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-service-pack-1/

Would that be the next step to try? If so, is there anything I need to know about performing this? Will any drivers have to be injected again?

Thank you

Applications Intermittently Fail During a Task Sequence

The software (McAfee VSE) installed successfully. It took 5 mins 20 seconds to install. The log file shows no errors. Detection method is MSI + version (greater than or equal to).

SCCM reports that:

Step 2 out of 2 complete
Install application action failed: 'McAfee Agent 4.8'. Error Code 0x80004005

This application runs during the OS build TS on every device, and works successfully 99% of the time. But not 100%.

SCCM detection methods are not reliable. If they are not 100% reliable, then they are a hindrance rather than a benefit.

Like a number of other applications, we have had to revert back to using a legacy package.

SCCM 1610 - Wanting to implement PXE OSD for Windows 10? Need guidance.

Hello,

We have a SCCM 1610 server and a fairly simple environment, couple locations with DPs and about 350 devices in total. We are upgrading to Windows 10, I want to leverage SCCM's PXE boot to speed up deploying the OS image.

I've read a lot online about this and I am a bit confused as there seem to be more than one way to do PXE OSD.

My goal is to deploy a fresh Windows 10 installation to new and existing desktops and laptops. So a mix of computers that are domain joined running CCM client and others that do NOT have an OS; so the solution needs to work for both scenarios.

During the process I would also like to enable UEFI, Secure Boot and Wake on Lan, which I know I can do using Dell’s Command Configure tool.

I do not need to migrate any settings, so backing up settings is not required to simplify things. I also read that latest build (1610 which we are on) Microsoft improved UEFI support according to

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/osd/deploy-use/task-sequence-steps-to-manage-bios-to-uefi-conversion.

What are the best options to accomplish this?  Can someone explain to me what “Zero Touch” OSD is? When do we use ADK if at all?

USMT share store permissions issue

Hi, everybody!

We've noticed one problem....

When usmt uses share store to save and restore user data (ex. \\bla-bla server\STORE) it takes off inherited permissions from share parent folder and leave only local admins and SYSTEM for targeted folder (\\bla-bla server\STORE\compname) while scanstate works....Suddenly share connect account (used for share connect step) and no one from support group can't access to that folder without placing them to local administrators group.....It's terribly bad(((((((( We can't give that service account and supporting group this rights.....

Why it retakes this permissions and how can we take around it? In my head there is only inherited permissions reinitialization from parent folder by script after scanstate ends...........

Can you tell something, guys?(((((((((((((

TS on target machine works with that share as mapped drive S.....Can it be possible cause of that?

Hi,

I have an issue  with Lenovo workstation P910. Its having Nvidia M6000(24GB). When i deploy Win 7 enterprise X64 bit by using SCCM 2012 Task Sequence, system successfully build. But, here is some issues listed below.

1. System keep saying your desktop is loading.

Note: I can login by using remote desktop service.

2. When i open device manager, under display drivers the Nvidia M6000 shows in warning exclamatory mark. When i open properties. It shows "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12). If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

I tried to rebuild the machine but, the issue is same.

kindly help me out.

Choose the right Management Point from WinPE

Hi everyone.

we have SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 CU1

the topology is 1 Primary Site with all the roles, 3 management points and 10 distribution points.

we use the Clients prefer to use management point specified in boundary groupwhich works great for clients.

we even use the AllowedMPs registry on clients just to make sure each client will go to it's closest and best management point without waiting for the clients to decide it independently.

from computers in the the primary site's boundary everything works as expected.

from other computers everything also works great but OS deployment.

when we boot a computer from another site to PXE and WinPE loads - the MP is always the wrong one! it doesn't respects the logics of the ConfigMgr's clients in terms of management points. and there we start to have all the problems regarding OS deployments.

I saw some workarounds that show how to start a script when the WinPE loads and edits the local hosts file to talk to the closest MPs IP based on gateway and stuff like that... very UGLY!

anyone else had the same issue?

hoping to find a nicer solution...

thanks

Deploy a VM to a Windows workstation with SCCM

Hey everyone,  could someone help me out here?  I know SCCM has the ability to deploy a VHD, but...

I want to deploy a preconfigured Windows 7 hyper-v session to a Windows 10 1607 system.  I assume I will have to use DISM or something to enable the Hyper-V service, but its actually importing it in that would be the problem.

Thanks

Offline Media creation Fails If Split WIM is attempted

I'm trying to create offline media using MDT 2013 update 2 and the 1511 ADK from a Windows 10 1511 workstation.

When I create offline media with default settings it works, but makes WIM file too bug for UEFI boot.

I then edited the settings.ini to skipsplitwim = true.  It started splitting the WIM and then it failed with an error stating "Could not find file" with path to the wim file.  The wim file does have the .wim file extension as part of the file name.

What could cause this issue?

Reinstall a computer - move to collection or delete ?

I have a very basic question, but can't seem to find an answer for it.

If we install a new computer through sccm, then it picks up the task sequence from the unknown collection.

But what to do if we need to reinstall the machine, after the user has left the company or just because it needs to be reinstalled (windows issues) or he needs to have an upgrade from windows 8 to 10

do we delete the computer from sccm, so it is again an unknown computer or do i create a new collection called something like reinstall and deploy the same tasksequence i did to the unknown collection, so we do not need to delete the computer from sccm.

so basicly Delete the computer from sccm or make a collection.

and why ?

Programs fails to install, alot of errors

Hello!

Im struggling with a task sequence deployment of windows 10 x64. The most obvious part is that alot of our programs in th TS fails to install from various reasons and error codes. I have had similar problems before, but not with these error codes. Tried googling  without luck. I would like to add the smsts and execmgr logs, but i dont know the most efficient way to upload them here.

execmgrexecmgrexecmgrsmstssmstssmsts

Edit: Added pictures. The first 3 are from the execmgr log. Those errors are repeated along with some others i think.

The next 3 are from the smsts. That log is stuffed with red and yellow lines...

I also have to add that error code 0x80070103 is the one that i cant find any good answers on. And the one that annoys me the most.

Thanks

SCCM2012, USMT, and Computer Personal Certificates - importing bad certs!

$

so, our setup, SCCM 2012 sp1, usmt, clients and servers communicating over https.  We have the computer certificates working perfectly.  I have an OSD Task sequence that works perfectly, until I add in the capture and restore user profile using USMT.  Once I add that in, it looks like USMT is trying to capture the computer certificate and then restore it - however when it restores, no surprise here, it's not valid and doesn't have a private key.  if I delete the cert and reboot or gpupdate/force - we're back in business, but that isn't a good solution because now we're touching 21,000 machines manually, which isn't good.

So my question - can I make USMT skip that certificate store? or can I make the OSD Task sequence delete the certs after the profile restore?  How are other people handling this?  Most people I talk to say they just don't use https - that isn't an option in our environment...

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have an inssue with some applications during OSD.

SCCM 2012R2 SP1 CU1 standalone and OSD windows 7 x64

I have an issue with 3 applications and nothing interesting in smsts

1) just copy some files in c:\I use an install.cmd and detection method is one registry key I create during deployment.

My application is installed but my TS is interrupted

@echo off

mkdir c:\AdminTools

xcopy admintools C:\admintools /S /Y

regedit /S install.reg

2) Install an application

My application is installed but ts interrupted too (AxelRemote)

AxRMsetup.exe /SP- /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /LANG=1036 /NOICONS
copy /Y AxRM2.axd %programdata%
regedit /S install.reg

3) Install an application

My application is installed but ts interrupted too (VPN Client)

start /wait msiexec /i vpnclient_setup.msi /qn /norestart /log install.txt
copy "profile.pcf" "%PROGRAMFILES%\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\Profiles"
exit /b %ERRORLEVEL%

4) copy files + register OCX

it's ok but my ts is broken

copy /Y %~dp0rsclientprint* %windir%\Syswow64\
%windir%\Syswow64\regsvr32 /s %windir%\Syswow64\rsclientprint.dll
exit /b %ERRORLEVEL%

Could you help me please :)

Something is wrond with my command lines ?

I don't have much experience to create command line installation so maybe I miss something...

I thought it was because I didn't add exit code but even adding it the issue persists.

SCCM 2012r2 - Office 2016 updates in Reference image

Hello I am fairly new to the realm of SCCM 2012 and I was wondering if anyone out there may be able to advise on an issue I recently bumped into...

I created and captured an image which contains Windows 7 SP1 x64, Office 2016 and all the relevant windows updates for both products to date. (Note: windows updates are handled by a WSUS server and is not integrated into the SCCM environment).

So I use SCCM 2012 to capture and create my reference image with no issue.

I then use a task sequence to deploy my image (which includes activating Win7 and Office 2016) to five test devices with no issues.

So then the fun starts :)

When I logged onto one of the test devices, Windows Update downloads and installs 1.5gigs of Office 2016 updates... This is a little strange as I was sure I baked these updates onto the original image.

So to test my theory I logged onto another one of my test devices and checked the "installed Windows Updates" and sure enough the Office 2016 updates are installed onto the system as I originally expected. Whilst I pondering this scenario, Windows Updates prompts me to install updates on this device. Upon checking what updates it wants to download and install, I find that they are the Office 2016 updates which are already installed.

Just for fun I allowed the Office updates to download and install once again. Once installed there were no further updates required... It did not need to download or install any of the hundreds of Windows 7 update.

So why is it that Windows Update is downloading and installing Office 2016 updates that are already installed on the system?

Thank you in advance for anyone who is able to provide any advice!

PXE Boot BCD Error

I seem to be having an issue with PXE booting from my DP, I get the following:

----

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2 Choose your language settings, and then click "next".

3. Click "Repair your Computer"

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \TMP\X86X64{STRING}.bcd

Status: 0xc0000098

Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data (BCD) file from the PXE server does not contain a valid operating system entry. Ensure that the server has boot images installed for this architecture

----

I have tried to uninstall WDS and disable the distribution point role then enable the role again.

I have rebuilt and redistributed my boot wim (x64 and x86)

Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be much appreciated.

Task sequence with Diskpart command

Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone has used CMD within the task sequence to clean the disks in the beginning of the task sequence...

Due to the reasons that we're using Symantec desktop encryption, we required to clean disk (within diskpart) so that rest of the task sequence can run.

Cheers

Danny

Failing to PXE boot with Oracle VirtualBox from Desktop to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 Server

$

Ok guys, hopefully someone can figure this one out, because I certainly can't.

I've been trying to PXE boot a virtual machine that's on my desktop from our SCCM 2012 server that's on a different subnet. Our SCCM server version is service pack 1 R2.

Our SCCM server is on 172.20, and desktops/laptops are on 172.28, and 172.20 does NOT have a DHCP server, but 172.28 does.

When trying to PXE boot from the VM, I get the following error:

"PXE-E53: No boot filename received

PXE-M0F: Exiting intel PXE ROM. FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System Halted."

Some things I should definitely mention:

  • A task sequence was deployed to the Unknown Computers group
  • The task sequence was set to PXE / Media mode
  • The boot image is present on the DP and set for PXE
  • The PXE is set to allow unknown computers
  • Enable command support is on in boot image
  • Oracle Virtualbox network settings is set on bridged adapter, allow all connections

The boot image version is 6.3.9600.16384 and was obtained from Windows ADK for windows 8.1. The windows image in the task sequence is a windows 10 image, completely flat. I know SCCM 2012 SP1 R2 doesn't fully support windows 10, but I know at least the boot images are good because I was able to create a capture image USB drive and it works fine.

I've read before that you need an IP helper or something to PXE boot across subnets, but the error reflected does not tell me it cannot find the DHCP server, the error you get with that is completely different from the one I am getting. Here is the SMSPXE.LOG. Can someone at least point me in the right direction?
